Notable US-Breds in Japan: Oct. 21 & 22, 2017

In this ongoing series, Alan Carasso takes a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Tokyo and Kyoto Racecourses, including the 2-year-old half-sister to a prominent 'TDN Rising Star' who is preparing for an appearance on Breeders' Cup Saturday at Del Mar:

DELTA BAROWS (c, 2, Into Mischief–Sweet Seventeen, by Hard Spun) is the first foal for his dam, winner of the 2012 Busher S. for owner Debby Oxley and trainer Graham Motion. A $200K FTSAUG yearling who fetched the same price after covering a furlong in :10 2/5 at FTFMAR, the February foal is a maternal grandson of SW & MGSP Play Ballado (Saint Ballado). Yuichi Fukunaga has the call for top conditioner Noriyuki Hori. B-John C Oxley (KY)

5th-KYO, ¥13,400,000 ($119k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1600mT
As her 'TDN Rising Star' half-sister Unique Bella (Tapit) continues to train forwardly towards an appearance in the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint Nov. 4, RELICARIO (f, 2, Malibu Moon–Unrivaled Belle, by Unbridled's Song) gets her career underway here. The Pennsylvania-bred, whose dam won the 2010 GI Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic before being purchased by Betty Moran's Brushwood Stable for $2.8m at KEENOV in 2011, is a granddaughter of MGSW Queenie Belle (Bertrando). Unrivaled Belle was subsequently sold to Mandy Pope's Whisper Hill Farm for $3.8m in foal to Tapit at KEENOV in 2016. B-Brushwood Stable (PA)

5th-TOK, ¥13,400,000 ($119k), Newcomers, 2yo, 2000mT
RAMSES BAROWS (c, 2, Curlin">Curlin–Devious Intent, by Dixie Union), a $425K KEESEP yearling purchase, breezed his eighth of a mile in :10 2/5 at this year's OBSMAR sale and was hammered down for $375K. Ramses Barows's GIII Gardenia S.-winning dam, a half-sister to SP Devious d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro), was sold to Stonestreet carrying the colt in utero for $350K at the 2014 FTKNOV sale. MOLTO ALLEGRO (f, 2, Speightstown–Mo Chuisle, by Free House) got her career off on a high note with a victory over the dirt at Hakodate June 24 (video, gate 8). The $525K KEESEP yearling, a half-sister to the late champion Points Offthebench (Benchmark) and GSW Bench Points (Benchmark), gave a good account of herself when switching to the turf last time, finishing runner-up at Sapporo Sept. 3 (video, gate 7).
