Notable US-Breds in Japan: Jan. 13 & 14, 2018

In this ongoing series, Alan Carasso takes a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Chukyo, Kyoto and Nakayama Racecourses, including a couple of newly turned sophomores sitting on maiden victories and a highly impressive son of Into Mischief making its stakes debut:

Saturday, January 13, 2018
3rd-CKO, ¥9,550,000 ($86k), Maiden, 3yo, 1200m
PERPETUO (f, 3, Pioneerof the Nile–Ribbon Taffy, by Hard Spun) caught a sloppy Kyoto main track on her Oct. 28 debut, but ran a bang-up race to finish a promising runner-up (video, gate five). Woodford Thoroughbreds purchased the February foal's dam for $160K carrying the filly in utero at KEENOV in 2014, then resold her produce for $170K at FTSAUG in 2016. The dark bay, out of a half-sister to former 'TDN Rising Star' Barrier Reef (Mizzen Mast), was a $540K grad of last year's FTFFEB sale. B-Woodford Thoroughbreds (KY)

5th-KYO, ¥9,550,000 ($86k), Maiden, 3yo, 1800mT
AMERICAN WORLD (c, 3, Kitten's Joy–Limonar {Ire}, by Street Cry {Ire}) is a half-brother to SW & GSP Mokarris (More Than Ready) and ran with credit in a pair of juvenile appearances, including a close third over course and distance in early November (video, gate seven). The $350K KEESEP yearling is out of a stakes-winning half-sister to GISW Talco (Fr) (Pivotal {GB}), while third dam Gossamer (Seattle Slew) produced 2004 G1 Irish 2000 Guineas winner Bachelor Duke (Miswaki). B-St Elias Stables LLC (KY)

Sunday, January 14, 2018
5th-CKO, ¥11,400,000 ($102k), Newcomers, 2000mT
Louisiana-bred JUPITER CALLISTO (c, 3, Curlin">Curlin–Moonlight Lover, by Bernardini) is the second foal from his unraced dam, a daughter of the talented MGSW sprinter Katz Me If You Can (Storm Cat). The $350K KEESEP yearling purchase counts Overbrook Farm's 1990 GI Hollywood Starlet S. heroine Cuddles (Mr. Prospector) as his third dam. The cross of Curlin over Seattle Slew-line mares has resulted in GISWs Stellar Wind and Exaggerator. B-Circle H Farms (LA)

11th-NKY, Keisei Hai-G3, ¥72m ($647k), 3yo, 2000mT
DELTA BAROWS (c, 3, Into Mischief–Sweet Seventeen, by Hard Spun) could scarcely have been more impressive in romping home to break his maiden on debut by four lengths going a mile over a rain-affected Tokyo turf course Oct. 21 (video, gate five). The first foal out of 2011 Busher S. winner Sweet Seventeen (Hard Spun), Delta Barows was a $200K FTSAUG yearling and $200K FTFMAR breezer. B-John C Oxley (KY)
