Kauai Katie, a $90,000 KEESEP yearling that developed into a $490,000 Fasig-Tipton Florida juvenile, put on a show for the opening-day crowd. The bay was sent to Saratoga early by trainer Todd Pletcher, putting together a solid worktab dating back to May 27 and highlighted by a smart five-furlong move in 1:01 July 9. Hustled from her rail draw by Rosie Napravnik after a slight bobble at the break, the 9-5 chalk clicked off fractions of :22.29 and :45.67, and dropped the hammer in the stretch to win by 12 eye-catching lengths. Kansas (Majestic Warrior) was second. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $48,000.
