National Pride, a $75,000 FTKJUL yearling and a $60,000 OBSMAR juvenile, fired a five-furlong bullet in :59 3/5 at the Big A Nov. 9 and was given a 9-2 chance to win at first asking. The chestnut raced toward the back of the pack in the early stages as 5-1 Saratoga Russell (Trippi) blazed the way through fractions of :21.84 and :44.88. With Eddie Castro aboard, he began to rally on the turn for home and rolled past the pacesetter in the stretch to take it by 1 3/4 lengths. National Pride marks the 16th winner for his freshman sire (by Holy Bull). Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $31,200.
