Holy Canyon hinted potential in his morning drills, posting a three-furlong breeze in :35 3/5 at Gulfstream Mar. 30 and a best-of-17 five-furlong bullet in :59 2/5 over the Belmont training track Apr. 18. Backed at odds of 5-2 for this debut run, the $110,000 KEESEP yearling and $250,000 KEEAPR juvenile sat close to 2-1 favorite The Duke of Stanco (City Zip) through fractions of :22.11 and :45.85. With Jean-Luc Samyn in the irons, the colt began to roll on the turn for home and quickened smartly in the stretch to win by an expanding 6 1/4 lengths. The Duke of Stanco stayed on to complete the exacta. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $25,800.
