Songster, a $200,000 FTKJUL yearling, showed a steady worktab at Payson, but was overlooked at the windows here at 8-1 while debuting from the 10-hole. With Edgar Prado aboard, the black colt broke sharply and hooked up with Royal Star (Montbrook) for an opening quarter of :22. The Darley colorbearer took over through a half mile in :44 3/5, began to edge clear in the stretch and held the 2-1 favorite Trippi’s Storm (Trippi) safe by 1 1/4 lengths. It was 7 3/4 lengths back to Eager Genius (Gulch) in third. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $19,200.
