| Deep Impact's Gentildonna Takes Japanese Oaks| TKY | G1 Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks) [2400 m (T)] | Winner: Gentildonna (Jpn), f, 3 by Deep Impact (Jpn) |
LA BELLA DONNA Sunday Racing's Gentildonna (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) annexed her second straight Classic with a sharp turn of foot in the G1 Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks) yesterday in Tokyo. The bay filly defeated Verxina (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) by a half-length in the G1 Oka Sho Apr. 8 at Hanshin, and was five lengths clear of her rival while stretching out to 2400 meters. She stopped the clock in 2:23.60, establishing a new stakes record. Unhurried in the early stages, Gentildonna swept into contention up the center of the course and, despite drifting out slightly, stamped her authority in imperious fashion. Gentildonna, from the second crop of her champion sire, led home a clean sweep for Deep Impact fillies in the G1 Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas) last month at Hanshin. Deep Impact's daughter Beauty Parlour (GB) confirmed her sire as a budding international presence with her victory in last Sunday's G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches at Longchamp, and Gentildonna continued the good work here. Her dam Donna Blini, heroine of the G1 Cheveley Park S. and G2 Cherry Hinton S. in 2005, was bought by Katsumi Yoshida for 500,000gns at Tattersalls December at the end of her 3-year-old campaign. The mare's 2010 Neo Universe (Jpn) colt sold for ¥80,000,000 (US$975,610) as a yearling to Eclipse Management last summer at the JRHA Select Sale.

Chinchon, who began his career in France, took his show on the road in 2010 by annexing the GI United Nations S. at Monmouth Park, and built up his frequent flyer account last season. Fifth in the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan, the bay filled the same spot behind Gitano Hernando (GB) (Hernando {Fr}) in this event two months later. He missed by a half-length when attempting his title defense in the United Nations last July, and was given the rest of the year off. After kicking off 2012 with a victory in the G3 Prix Exbury at Saint-Cloud Mar. 17, Chinchon travelled to Sha Tin and wound up eighth in the G1 Audemars Piguet QEII Cup Apr. 29. The start was delayed a bit when Godolphin's City Style (City Zip) became fractious, then refused to enter the stalls before being scratched. With Flax making the running, Chinchon settled into a ground-saving spot in midpack. Jockey Olivier Doleuze angled him off the fence entering the stretch, and the 7-year-old came through between rivals on his way to the big prize. "I took the risk to be on the inside during the race and Felix [Coetzee, aboard California Memory] improved in front of me and took me into the race and we could finish off well," said Doleuze. "With the cut out of the ground, it made a big difference and he was travelling like the winner the whole way. In the straight, once I was able to switch him out to the outside, he accelerated very strongly."

This proved the ideal re-introduction for last year's Arc heroine Danedream, who defied a penalty to set herself up for her upcoming major tests. The last time she had been here was when destroying Germany's best in the G1 Grosser Preis von Baden and, although there was no repeat of those theatrics, the bay demonstrated that she retains ability with a game win. Settled in a share of third early off the honest fractions, she traveled strongly at the end of the back straight, but Andrasch Starke waited until swinging off the home turn to make his move. In front passing the quarter pole, she was alone in the center of the track and may have been idling as Ovambo Queen cut into her advantage in company with Silvaner late on. Trainer Peter Schiergen said, "She is only at about 85% fit as yet, and this race had to be won first. Her next options are the June 24 G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud or the G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S. [at Ascot July 21]. Her main targets this year are the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe [at Longchamp Oct. 7] and the G1 Japan Cup [at Tokyo Nov. 25]."

Punters could not make up their mind which Fame and Glory would turn up for this traditional prep for the Royal meeting, which he won 12 months ago and which predecessor Yeats (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) took on two occasions, and he was allowed to drift despite being sent off the marginal market leader over Unaccompanied. Racing in a close-up second early, the bay took up the running with over a mile to race and despite being strongly pressed by the second favorite in the final quarter mile, kept digging in to show his best form. Despite a long-winded pedigree, top and bottom, I'll Have Another led past every pole to register a 3/4-length debut victory at Hollywood last July 3, then had the misfortune of running into the big-figure maiden winner Creative Cause in the GII Best Pal S. at Del Mar Aug. 7 and dropped a 1 3/4-length decision while finishing runner-up. Attempting to strike while the iron was hot, connections sent the chestnut colt cross-country for the GI Three Chimneys Hopeful S. at Saratoga Sept. 5, but little went right, as he caught a sloppy and sealed track, was off the track leaving entering the final half-mile and struggled home a distant sixth in what would mark a somewhat frustrating end to a season that began with such promise. Plan B Works Just Fine... Owner Paul Reddam and trainer Doug O'Neill were eyeballing a down-the-hill allowance for I'll Have Another's seasonal return, but the colt was reportedly doing so well that the decision was made to try him in the Feb. 4 GII Robert B. Lewis S. instead. Dismissed at 43-1 in that seasonal return, and ridden for the first time by Mario Gutierrez, he stormed by to score by 2 3/4 lengths and was pointed for a start in the GI Santa Anita Derby. A 4-1 chance to favored Creative Cause, I'll Have Another fought his way to a nose victory and a trip to Churchill Downs. Drawn in the parking lot and let go at 15-1 given all he had to overcome, he was able to save ground into the clubhouse turn, came out in upper stretch and outfinished Bodemeister, who was forced to set a wicked pace, for the upset. Another Flawless Performance... Bodemeister, favored in the rematch at 17-10, won the break and made the lead passing the stands for the first time, while--somewhat surprisingly--Creative Cause emerged as the nearest pace presence. I'll Have Another jumped fairly and was handy enough while racing in about the three path, but was nudged out a bit wider by Went the Day Well (Proud Citizen) approaching the clubhouse turn. The Team Valor runner backed off a bit, and that allowed Gutierrez to tuck into a three-wide spot around the turn and into the backstretch. Back on the front end, Bodemeister and Mike Smith were coasting along through an opening half-mile in :47.68, not taxing on paper, but perhaps an above-par pace over a dull strip. Creative Cause was in good striking position from second, while I'll Have Another was three wide, but covered up behind his grey fellow Californian. Bodemeister was still going smartly on the engine at the three-eighths marker, and Gutierrez seemed to have a few seconds of hesitation, as he tried to decide whether to go inside or outside of Creative Cause. He remained off that one's heels to the quarter pole, was switched out thereafter and was a bit clumsy in switching his leads. It looked for a few strides as if I'll Have Another might have work to do to catch the free-wheeling Bodemeister, but he continued to plug away with dour determination, took aim on the Baffert runner entering the final half-furlong and pegged him back in the final two strides. Creative Cause finished third, though nearly nine lengths off the top two. The winning rider admitted to expecting a dogfight in the waning stages. "I knew it was going to be a little bit of a tough race," he said. "But I'll Have Another had a tremendous kick in the end. So I could feel my horse racing ground and everything was definitely the way. So it's a great feeling when you're riding a horse that's giving you a hundred percent. He's an amazing horse."
| | 15.40 at NBY | G1 JLT Lockinge S. [1m (T)] | Winner: Frankel (GB), c, 4 by Galileo (Ire) |
A PERFECT TEN Noises from the Southern Hemisphere have recently questioned whether Frankel (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) is indeed the world's best, but the Juddmonte juggernaut's reply came across loud and clear yesterday as he went 10-for-10 in his own incredible fashion in Newbury's G1 Lockinge S. Despite a well-documented setback in training last month and a race-hardened Excelebration (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) lining up to expose any resulting flaw, Khalid Abdullah's legend-in-the-making simply continued where he left off with another monstrous performance. Sent off the 2-7 favorite, the unbeaten star followed his 3/4-brother Bullet Train (GB) (Sadler's Wells) as he would on the Newmarket slopes and, when asked to go on with a quarter mile remaining, stretched out in customary style to wallop his old adversary Excelebration once again by five lengths. "He belongs to racing at the moment," jockey Tom Queally. "He's filled out and is the real deal now." Newbury was the venue at which Frankel's 3-year-old career was launched, and the little-known Excelebration got his first taste of chasing him in vain during the G3 Greenham S. The pair met on two further occasions and, although the latter got closer to him in the G1 St James's Palace S., the order was always the same. That Royal Ascot contest seemed to expose a weakness in Khalid Abdullah's colt, as he appeared to tread water late on there, but any doubts were dispelled by commanding performances in Goodwood's G1 Sussex S. in July and the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. on Ascot's Champions' Day. Not long after he had caused untold stress to connections when striking into himself on the gallops, Frankel was giving all a reminder of his prowess in a public exercise on 2000 Guineas day, and had reportedly done even better when taken back to Newmarket's circuit last Saturday. Tom Queally was full of confidence entering this high-profile return and, although he had a bullseye on his back with Joseph O'Brien settling Excelebration on his heels, the most-envied jockey in the Northern Hemisphere was only watching Bullet Train ahead. Moving into pole position with a quarter mile remaining, the combination were soon extending the margin between them and Ballydoyle's challenger without any recourse to the whip. "It's a great relief he's come back and great to be on board," Queally said. "He showed that burst of acceleration and is not like anything I've ever sat on or ever will do. He has grown up from last year and is thicker-set. He's a great horse." Frankel's next options are the June 19 G1 Queen Anne S. over a mile or a first try at 10 furlongs in the following day's G1 Prince of Wales's S. and, while no decision has been made at this point, his trainer strongly suggested that the former will be his target at the Royal meeting. "It hasn't been straightforward with 10 days off, but the team have got him through it and done exactly what I wanted them to do, so I want to thank them," a typically emotional and humble Sir Henry Cecil said. "He's always taken a hold, but he quickens so well and his first race is never his best. He always improves for a race and has had a very good blow afterwards. He's done everything right and in every sport a champion is needed, so it's good for racing. We'll take it step-by-step and he's in the two races at Ascot, so we'll feel our way. The Prince is amazing and leaves it to me. I don't want him to run over a mile and a quarter until he's ready for it, and so the mile is more likely at Ascot. If we stick to a mile there, he may be ready to step up in August or September time. Time will tell."

Hudson Steele had logged just six starts over the course of his 3- and 4-year-old seasons, finishing second–via disqualification--in the Oliver S. at Indiana Downs ahead of a victory in the Jersey Derby. He faced the starter but twice in 2011, for a good-looking score over some stakes-tested rivals in a third-level allowance over the Gulfstream turf in April, and was shelved off a neck defeat at the hands of Straight Story (Giant's Causeway) in Belmont's GIII Fort Marcy S. the next month. Gone nine days short of a full year off that effort, Hudson Steele returned to action in this track's Henry S. Clark S. Apr. 28, rallying from third to score as the 2-1 favorite, with Humble and Hungry back in fourth in his seasonal debut. Tucked away in about fourth position as Straight Story doled out reasonable splits up front, Hudson Steele bided his time around the turn and waited for that pacesetter to come back to him. He did just that entering the stretch, and Javier Castellano took full advantage, collaring him at the three-sixteenths pole before going on to a clear-cut victory. Humble and Hungry followed the move of the eventual winner while saving ground for most of the opening seven furlongs and stayed on well into second.

A two-time Group 3 winner in France during her sophomore year, Martin Schwartz's Zagora quickly established herself as one to watch with a runner-up finish in that year's GI QEII at Keeneland. During her 4-year-old campaign, the chestnut, who placed earlier that term in Belmont's GII New York H. and GIII Hillsborough S. at Tampa, got her Grade I in the July 30 GI Diana S. at Saratoga. Seventh in her 2011 finale in the GII Canadian H. Sept. 18, kicked off 2012 the right way when taking a pair of Tampa stakes; the GIII Endeavor S. Feb. 4 and Mar. 10 the GIII Hillsborough S. Favored in her latest start, the French bred came home fifth–beaten 3 3/4 lengths–in Keeneland's GI Jenny Wiley S. at 1 1/16 miles Apr. 14. Sent off the piping hot favorite for her first go at Old Hilltop, the Chad Brown trainee was a little flat-footed at the start and assumed her customary place at the back of the pack through an honest opening quarter mile in :23.80. Improving her position steadily as pacesetter Speak Easy Gal reeled off splits of :48.02 half and 1:12.02 three quarters, Zagora was two wide turning for home and overtook the wilting leader to post her third win of the season. "It worked out really good," said winning rider Javier Castellano. "It was a great performance. The pace was pretty fast today and she didn't break that good. I was a little concerned about that, but the bottom line is that it worked out great." Brown added, "Once she gets settled and gathers herself together, she really has a strong kick. Javier's a top rider and, when he's on my horses, I'm a lot less nervous. Nine times out of 10, he finds a way. She didn't break that well, but I thought Javier did a great job to stay on the inside. He knew he was on the best horse."

Awesomemundo graduated by 4 1/2 lengths last June 25 and came right back to clear her first allowance condition in Inglewood the next month, but went missing off a well-beaten third over the Del Mar Polytrack Aug. 4. The dark bay proved that she was something more than a synthetic specialist in her lone previous outing this season, a 7 1/2-length romp at Santa Anita Feb. 19. Favored here despite her relative inexperience, Awesomemundo was a bit flat-footed at the outset and dropped out to the latter third of the field as Canadian Mistress (Canadian Frontier) set a solid pace from Love and Pride. The latter moved to the fore approaching the stretch and set sail for home, as Awesomemundo still had plenty to do from sixth. But the Baffert runner began picking off rivals, exchanged bumps with Love and Pride inside the final furlong and prevailed.

Despite looking uneasy on the downhill descent into the "dip," the bay rallied to lead again passing the furlong pole and hold the penalized Noble Mission in a tight four-way finish "He's still in the Derby, but the owner will make the final decision," trainer John Gosden told PA Sport. "We could also look at the G2 King Edward S. [at Royal Ascot June 22], and there's also the race in September which the owner likes a lot." Click for the Racing Post chart. Scratched: Achilles, Going to Market. Skyring provided his sophomore sire (by Smart Strike) his third stakes winner with a hard-fought wire-to-wire victory. An allowance winner on the dirt on the Derby undercard May 5, the Bluegrass Hall homebred was somewhat improbably making his turf debut in his eighth career start. He was put right on the lead by jockey Joel Rosario and set honest splits while well off the rail. The pressing Hammers Terror (Artie Schiller) came calling in upper stretch, and after gamely turning back that challenge, Skyring kept on fighting to earn the neck victory in a four- or five-horse blanket finish. Easy Crossing completed the English Channel exacta, with Mr. Handsome (Rock Hard Ten) completing the Lane's End trifecta. A jockeys' objection against the winner by the third-place finisher was disallowed. "This horse I liked the best of all mine all day long," said trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who took the GIII Maryland Sprint H. with Hamazing Destiny (Salt Lake) one race earlier. "I felt real good about him. I was anxious to get him on the grass. Corey [Nakatani] rode him at Churchill and loved him. We said, well, English Channel, maybe we should try the grass. It really worked out well. I knew at the top of the stretch when they swarmed him, I said to myself, 'He isn't done yet.' This horse really tries." Click for the brisnet.com chart or Video, sponsored by Taylor Made Sales.

Also Ran: Saigon (GB), Mr Red Clubs (Ire), Van Ellis (GB), Silverheels (Ire). Held in high esteem by Roger Varian, Aljamaaheer opened his account on debut over six furlongs at Yarmouth in October, but was only fourth when sent off the 5-4 favorite for a decent seven-furlong handicap at Newbury on his sophomore bow Apr. 20. That form was boosted when the winner Gregorian (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}) ran a close-up fifth in Sunday's G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains, and Aljamaaheer duly took his own step forward here to register a first black-type success. Held up early with only one behind, the chestnut as full of run inside the final quarter and, when asked the question, swooped to the lead passing the furlong pole. Kept up to his work from there, he was always holding Juddmonte's similarly promising The Nile, who appeared unsuited to the undulations of this track. "We'll discuss it with Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum and Angus Gold, but the G3 Jersey S. at Royal Ascot looks the next logical step," Varian told PA Sport. Click for the Racing Post chart. PAYNTER (c, 3, Awesome Again--Tizso, by Cee's Tizzy) was tabbed a J "TDN Rising Star" J for his 4 1/4-length debut success at Santa Anita in February, and finished fourth on the stretch-out behind I'll Have Another (Flower Alley) in the Apr. 7 GI Santa Anita Derby. He was second in the GIII Derby Trial S. under the lights at Churchill three weeks ago, and was made a 1-9 shot on the drop down in class. Sharing pacesetting duties with second choice Brimstone Island (Tiznow) from the two path through splits of :24.21, :48.31 and 1:12.29, the $325,000 KEESEP yearling blew that rival away in the final furlong and put about eight lengths on him at the line. The winner is a half to Tizakitty (Distinctive Cat), SW, $158,644; and Tiz West (Gone West), GSW, $263,761, and was produced by a full-sister to dual GI Breeders' Cup Classic hero Tiznow. 4th-BEL, $77,000, Alw, Opt. Clm. ($75,000), NW1X, 3yo, 1 1/16m, 1:42, ft. STREET BRAWL (c, 3, Street Sense--Regally Appealing {GSW, $296,925}, by Valid Appeal) was offered up at relatively generous 5-1 odds at first asking at Aqueduct Apr. 14, but rewarded those who backed him with a sharp score going 6 1/2 panels. Aiming to remain unbeaten in his first go at a route, the slight 8-5 choice was away alertly underneath Rosie Napravnik and set pressured :23.52 and :46.99 splits as Inflation Target (Tapit) pressed to his outside. Those two continued into the lane when a sharp left-handed crack by Napravnik prompted Street Brawl to veer out and knock Inflation Target. All parties quickly righted themselves, however, and Street Brawl cruised home 1 1/4 lengths clear as Inflation Target gave futile chase. Stewards look at the bumping incident but let the result stand. In the last 60 days, Napravnik has won aboard five of the 11 Todd Pletcher-trained horses she's ridden, according to brisnet.com stats.
