Malibu Moon Filly Tops Fasig Fall

Fasig-Tipton's one-day Midlantic Fall Yearlings sale took place Tuesday in Timonium, MD with 274 head changing hands for $5,228,800 in gross receipts. Average price for the auction was $19,083, down 12.9% from last year's average of $21,905. Median remain unchanged at $10,000, while the 2015 RNA rate decreased from 27.6% 12 months ago to 25.3%. Five yearlings went for $100,000 or more this year compared to nine in 2014.

Topping the sale was hip 345, a $200,000 Malibu Moon filly consigned by Herb and Ellen Moelis's Candyland Farm, who co-bred the grey in Kentucky along with Nancy Terjune and Ernest Frohboese. Washington, D.C.-based Ellen Charles was the buyer. Hip 345 is out of MSW and GSP Apenglow (Lion Hearted), a full-sister to fellow MSW Silver Heart.

The top colt was hip 231, who hails from the first crop of Bodemeister and brought $190,000 from Peter G. Angelos, majority owner of the Baltimore Orioles as well as Maryland's Marathon Farm. David and JoAnn Hayden's Dark Hollow Farm consigned the bay, and bred him from the same family as Hall of Famer Safely Kept.
