Looming Presence

Mrs Danvers | Racing Post

Already the bargain sensation of 2016, the unbeaten Mrs Danvers (GB) (Hellvelyn {GB}) takes on the strongest cast of rivals yet in Friday's G3 the Newmarket Academy Godolphin Beacon Project Cornwallis S. Having conquered the Weatherbys Super Sprint July 16 and Listed St Hugh's S. Aug. 12 at Newbury, the grey who was unable to make more than £1,000 at the Ascot Breeze-Ups now takes on the likes of the July 27 G3 Molecomb S. winner Yalta (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) and Aug. 7 G1 Phoenix S. runner-up Courage Under Fire (War Front). “This was the logical race and she seems well enough now,” trainer Jonathan Portman said. “She did go a bit off-colour, so it has been a race against time to get her back but I think we've managed it. She's a little bit dull in her coat, but I'm not concerned about that as we won this a couple of years ago with Royal Razalma and she looked like a Shetland pony. She's been a marvellous story. She's by an unfashionable stallion, for small breeders, a small trainer and a group of 92 owners. She was the horse nobody wanted, but she owes us nothing.” Another filly who has exceeded expectations since selling for a minor sum is Middleham Park Racing's Clem Fandango (Fr) (Elzaam {Aus}) and she also steps up in class following an authoritative win in the Listed Harry Rosebery S. over this trip at Ayr Sept. 16.
