COLM DOUGHERTY

In response to the article in today's TDN (Sikura: Surface Tension Is Superficial), I feel that Mr Sikura and Mr McGrath are both slightly missing the point. Many of us in the European racing world have great admiration and respect for the history of the North American Thoroughbred–without it things would look distinctly different here. What we find hard to accept however is the extremely lenient view taken on raceday medication. This is the fault of the horsemen not the horses themselves clearly.

Until American racing's participants come together to agree that they will race horses on their merits rather than on drugs which can mask the very weaknesses that we should not be perpetuating in the breed, then they will not gain the respect of their colleagues in the wider racing world.

Keep up the excellent work in the TDN.
