Kantharos Colt Tops OBS Wednesday

The Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's August Yearling Sale continued Wednesday with the first of two open sessions and figures were off significantly from a year ago. In all, 207 yearlings grossed $1,770,300 during the session. The average fell 42.8% to $8,552 and the median decreased 53% to $10,000. During last year's first open session, 210 horses grossed $3,141,200 for an average of $14,958 and a median of $10,000. From 386 catalogued head, 326 were offered Wednesday with 119 failing to meet their reserves for a buy-back rate of 36.5%.

A colt by Kantharos brought the session's top price when selling to De Meric Stables for $80,000. Consigned by Francis and Barbara Vanlangendonck's Summerfield, hip 412 is out of Miss Skeetd (Cloud Hopping) and is a full-brother to graded stakes winner Mr. Jordan. De Meric Sales consigned Mr. Jordan to the 2014 OBS April sale where he sold for $155,000. The session-topping yearling was bred in Florida by Philip and Karen Matthews.

The August sale's second and final open session begins Thursday at 10:30 a.m.
