Japanese Derby Hero Wins St Leger Prep

Rey de Oro winning the Hopeful | Horsephotos

Reappearing Sunday as the 6-5 favourite in his first start since winning the May 28 G1 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby), Rey de Oro secured position while a tad keen in fourth heading into the first turn, before settling down and focusing on business for the backstretch run. The first 1000 metres was covered in 1:01.40, and the Carrot Farm colourbearer began edging closer on the final bend.  Letting down strongly 200 metres out, the race, a Japanese St Leger Trial, was over in a matter of strides, as the Derby hero quickly squelched his opposition, cantering across the line two lengths in front of Kiseki.

A winner of the G2 Hopeful S. on Christmas Day in 2016, Rey de Oro (Jpn) suffered the only defeat of his young career when fifth in the G1 Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas) at Nakayama in April. He duly atoned for that poor showing when capturing the G1 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) over this trip in Tokyo on May 28.

Pedigree Notes…

By Japanese champion sophomore colt and good sire King Kamehameha (Jpn) (Kingmambo), Rey de Oro is one of three winners from three foals out of the winning La Dorada (Jpn) (Symboli Kris S.) The February-foaled colt's second dam is a half-sister to champion and star Japanese sire Deep Impact (Jpn) (Sunday Silence), as well as GSW Veil of Avalon (Thunder Gulch), and SWs New Beginning (Jpn) (Agnes Tachyon {Jpn}) and Group 1 sire Black Tide (Jpn) (Sunday Silence).
