Horn Still In Breeders' Cup Picture

John Gosden | Racing Post

Anthony Oppenheimer's star sophomore Golden Horn (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) remains in the frame for the Breeders' Cup should the ground come up heavy for Sunday's G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, according to trainer John Gosden.

We are very much in the hands of the weather [for the Arc] and we'll see how the ground plays,” said Gosden. “If we get the ground, great, if we don't then we might have to reverse the plans again.”

Gosden explained that he inspected the Keeneland track when in town for the September sale and found it suitable for the G1 Epsom Derby, G1 Coral-Eclipse and G1 Irish Champion S. winner.

“He has a lot of speed; the Breeders' Cup comes later in the year,” the conditioner said. “I walked that track [Keeneland] the other day when I was over there for the sales. It's in good condition, and there's no reason that couldn't be a swansong for him at the end of the year, which is something to consider as well.”

Gosden reiterated that Oppenheimer plans to retire Golden Horn at the end of the year, telling At The Races, “I had a good go at Mr. Oppenheimer with Frankie [Dettori] in the plane on the way back from [the Irish Champion S.], but he would not move. That was our one big chance and we didn't even land a TKO, never mind a knockout.”
