High-Quality Filly: Paved Handles the Boys in El Camino Real

Quality Road | Lee Thomas

Paved rallied for third in her first two starts going a mile on the turf at Santa Anita Oct. 21 and behind next out Blue Norther S. heroine Ippodamia's Girl (Stormy Atlantic) at Del Mar Nov. 25. She graduated impressively last time out when stretching an extra furlong at Santa Anita Jan. 6.

Taking on the boys here and breaking from the rail, the favorite was tucked in along the inside in the run to the clubhouse turn. Patiently handled by Drayden Van Dyke, she saved all the ground around the far turn while still in hand before being tipped out to the outside of pacesetter Mugaritz (Dialed In) and taking the lead just outside the furlong marker. Paved gradually pulled away inside the final sixteenth and held off a charge from City Plan to earn 10 points towards the Kentucky Derby.

Paved impressed when he breezed a furlong in :10 1/5 at last year's OBS March sale is the first black-type winner out of Sirmione, who's dam is GSW Desert Digger (Mining). Sirmione also has a juvenile colt by Animal Kingdom.
