Ghostzapper Filly Scores Narrow Victory in Summertime Oaks

Faypien | Benoit

Faypien became the second graded stakes winner for her sire in a matter of about 10 minutes, winning the Summertime Oaks shortly after “TDN Rising Star” McCraken (Ghostzapper) scored in the GIII Matt Winn S. at Churchill Downs. Sent off at 7-2, the $720,000 OBSAPR purchase pressed from a joint second with Spooky Woods (Ghostzapper) as longshot Sheza Chattykat (Trappe Shot) clocked opening splits of :23.14 and :46.95. Drawing even with the pacesetter turning for home, the bay was four-wide at the top of the stretch as Spooky Woods slipped up the inside to take control. Faypien kept on finding to surge past that rival in the final strides and hold off Mopotism for a narrow success. Spooky Woods crossed the line third, but was disqualified and placed fifth for interfering with favored It Tiz Well (Arch) in the stretch, causing the “TDN Rising Star” to check hard. Majestic Quality was promoted to third and It Tiz Well was moved up to fourth.

“There's always concerns going into a race, but she really grinds it out every race and she's tough,” winning trainer Bob Baffert commented. “She's all heart and she was all heart that last hundred yards. When we purchased her we were hoping for something like this. I honestly thought my other horse, Noted and Quoted (The Factor) [who finished last of eight], would do better. She seemed like she was in a good spot but it didn't pan out. Rafael [Bejarano] rode a great race today though and he rode with a lot of confidence. He had the horse to finish it with.”

Third behind “TDN Rising Star” and GI Santa Anita Oaks winner Paradise Woods (Union Rags) on debut in Arcadia Mar. 11, Faypien graduated by 4 1/2 lengths next out there Apr. 23 and bested Grade I-winning stablemate Noted and Quoted in the Angel Flight S. May 14.

Pedigree Notes:

Faypien summoned $720,000 from the ever successful team of Donato Lanni and Bob Baffert on behalf of Susan and Charlie Chu's Baoma Corp. at the OBS April sale after breezing in :20.2, making her the most expensive Ghostzapper juvenile sold last year. Her connections returned to the well, stretching to $800,000 to take home a colt by that Adena Springs sire at last month's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Old Sale after a :10.1 breeze. These connections are also responsible for champion sprinter Drefong (Gio Ponti).

Faypien is out of NY-bred stakes winner Mighty Eros, who won two of six starts for Joe Appelbaum's Off the Hook LLC. The 13-year-old mare RNA'd for $37,000 at the 2016 Keeneland January sale, carrying a foal by Munnings. The resulting foal was a filly born May 8 of last year and Mighty Eros produced a Zivo filly Apr. 25 of this year.
