During Filly Goes Gate-to-Wire in Old Hat

Lucy n Ethel | Leslie Martin

Lucy N Ethel, perfect in a pair of outings at Parx, passed her class test with flying colors as the odds-on chalk here. A debut winner after setting a quick pace against fellow Pennsylvania-breds Nov. 16, the dark bay ran up the score to 13 1/4 lengths in an open allowance Dec. 8, earning a stand-out 89 Beyer Speed Figure. Tugging her way to take the early advantage, the homebred posted fractions of :22.68 and :45.59 before stiff-arming longshot My Dear Venezuela for a convincing victory.

“I had to use her a little bit the first part to get the early lead,” noted winning pilot Joshua Navarro. “As soon as they got to me at the 3/8-pole, she gave me another gear and kept going. I was worried. I was thinking she wins the first two times in Philly, but Philly and here is way different. So if she wins today, she proves she belongs, and she did it today.”

Added trainer Ramon Preciado, “She ran how we expected. I think the next time she's going to be even better… She could be better than we thought. At the beginning we thought she was a nice filly. Her first race, she impressed us a little bit, but in her second race, she really exploded. This race she was better, and the next time she's going to be better.”

Preciado, who sent out Lucy N Ethel's full-brother Jake N Elwood and half-sister Hey Kiddo to stakes wins last season, said she would be pointed to the GII Forward Gal S. back in Hallandale Jan. 30.
