Daysee Blossoms In Coolmore Classic

Daysee Doom | Bronwen Healy

Daysee Doom (Aus) (Domesday {Aus}) displayed an affinity for Rosehill second-up last spring when winning the G3 Golden Pendant S. over 1400 metres, and the mare is now two-for-two over the course this prep and earned her first Group 1 win in Saturday's Coolmore Classic. Let go at 20-1 despite having won the G2 Millie Fox S. here first-up on Feb. 24, Daysee Doom traveled wide but just two lengths off the pace down the back of the course under last season's Sydney champion apprentice Andrew Adkins. Moving closer at the 900 metre mark to sit just a half-length off the pacesetting Flippant (Aus) (Hinchinbrook {Aus}), Daysee Doom drew level with that rival when put to a drive at the top of the stretch. In front passing the furlong marker, she had to hold off a wall of challengers but found the line in time and galloped out in front. The first six home were separated by less than a length, and in second was another daughter of Domesday, Oregon's Day (Aus).

Trainer Ron Quinton has written a significant chapter of the history of the Coolmore Classic: he won it twice as a jockey, including the inaugural running in 1973, and has now taken the spoils three times as a trainer, with Ofcourseican (Aus) (Mossman {Aus}) in 2012 and Peeping (Aus) (Redoute's Choice {Aus}) two years ago.

“It has been a lucky race for me,” Quinton told Racing NSW after receiving congratulations from many of his colleagues. “I've always been fortunate that I've always had a few good mares around the place. Thank God for them, they are carrying the rest of them. [Daysee Doom] is as tough as teak. She never knows when she is beaten. There were no excuses for the ones behind her. They all had their opportunity to beat her and they couldn't.”

Daysee Doom is nominated for both the G1 Doncaster Mile and G1 Coolmore Legacy S. at The Championships.

Pedigree Notes…

Daysee Doom is the first, and thus far only reported, foal for her stakes-placed dam See A Victory (Aus) (Mister C). The dam is a half-sister to a pair of listed winners and under the fourth dam is the G1 Doncaster Mile and G1 George Main S. winner and young Darley sire Kermadec (NZ) (Teofilo {Ire}).
