Curlin Filly Lands Honeybee

Curlin | Hill 'n' Dale Farm

Terra Promessa, a close third after hopping at the start in her Keeneland debut Oct. 14, stretched to two turns with a measured maiden special weight tally at Churchill Downs Nov. 15. She romped by nine lengths over track and trip in her 3-year-old bow here Feb. 5 and was supported as the second choice behind her stablemate Nickname in this one.

Caught in some traffic in between horses on the clubhouse turn, she settled in a much better spot in fourth as they hit the backstretch. With Ricardo Santana Jr in the irons, the Stonestreet homebred hit the gas with a three-wide sweep on the turn for home and exploded down the lane to win for fun. Nickname, heroine of last term's GI Frizette S. in the Belmont slop, settled for second.

“The way the races have been playing the last few days, I think her natural style played very favorably for today,” trainer Steve Asmussen offered. “I think Terra Promessa has benefitted from being here. Horses that excel here–she's found new life. She's come along awfully nicely. Her being a Curlin filly makes it very special for myself. Having Curlin have another graded stakes winner is very exciting.”

Asmussen, who, of course, trained the aforementioned two-time Horse of the Year for Stonestreet, added that the winner would be aimed at Oaklawn's GIII Fantasy S. Apr. 9.

Terra Promessa's dam was a $700,000 Keeneland November acquisition in 2006 while in foal to Forestry. She produced a Maclean's Music colt last year and was bred back to Astrology.
