What is the most pressing problem that needs to be tackled in racing, and how would you solve it?

The biggest issue I see right now is the lack of unity. The current state-by-state regulatory structure is very limiting to the future of this great sport. National uniformity is the answer. Rules need to be well defined and discipline severe.

What do you think somebody from the outside looking in-somebody not involved in racing-would say the problem that most needs solving is?

I can imagine an outsider being intimidated by our sport. The racetrack experience for a first-time attendee can be frustrating and unwelcoming. In addition, a novice is almost guaranteed to find the betting process confusing and overwhelming, especially when one strays away from W/P/S into the expensive exotic options of quinella, trifecta & superfecta betting. Betting and handicapping systems and formats have not changed with the times and are not conducive to a positive experience for the novice handicapper. This is truly a missed opportunity for us given that we know, from the spectacular growth in fantasy sports, that skill-based gaming appeals to a vast number of the young and affluent and we have arguably the most data-rich game there is.

We need to do a better job inviting the next generation and converting the occasional attendee into a regular and enthusiastic supporter. After all, this is one of the only sports where you can afford to participate as an owner, with all the joy and thrill that entails. I would like to see more syndicates created in major cities like L.A., New York and Miami, where you will find a population of young professionals. That winning feeling is exhilarating every time, no matter if you own 2% or 100%. Night racing has been well received in Churchill Downs and might be a big hit at some of our metropolitan racetracks around the country.

At the end of the day, we need to focus more on attracting the newcomer and retaining their interest by catering to their needs in every possible way. We need to be available to answer all questions, and we need to make more use of our celebrity owners, trainers and jockeys. People have an enormous number of sports to choose from in the world today. It's incumbent upon us to ensure that those who show enough enthusiasm to visit once, return time and time again.
