Robert Marzilli's Caren (Society's Chairman), a three-time stakes winner last term, was named Canada's 2016 Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old filly at Thursday evening's 42nd annual Sovereign Awards ceremony held in Toronto.

Trained by Michael De Paulo, the $45,000 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall yearling purchase captured the GIII Ontario Colleen S., the Wonder Where S. and Bison City S. De Paulo also trains the newly minted champion sprinter Noholdingback Bear (Put It Back).

It was a big evening for trainer Mark Casse, who earned his ninth Sovereign Award as outstanding trainer. Lexie Lou (Sligo Bay {Ire}), Canada's 2014 Horse of the Year, was named champion female turf horse, while fellow Casse stablemates Conquest Enforcer (Into Mischief) (Male Turf Horse); Victory to Victory (Exchange Rate) (2-Year-Old Filly); and King and His Court (Court Vision) (2-Year-Old Male) were recognized as well.

Amis Gizmo (Giant Gizmo), a runaway winner of the GIII Ontario Derby and Prince of Wales S., earned champion 3-year-old male honors. His dam Galloping Ami (Victory Gallop) was named outstanding broodmare for owner/breeder Ivan Dalos.

As previously announced, Frank Stronach was recognized with the E.P. Taylor Award of Merit. Stronach's Adena Springs was also named outstanding breeder while Ernie Semersky's now defunct Conquest Stables was named outstanding owner.
