Calculator Makes Up for Lost Time at Santa Anita

CALCULATOR (c, 4, In Summation–Back to Basics, by Alphabet Soup) off for more than a year since a promising score in the GIII Sham S. here last January, made up for lost time in more ways than one. Relegated to last after completely missing the break, the grey rushed up outside of horses and all the way to the front after a half in :44.50. Second-timer Fusaichi Samurai (Street Cry {Ire}) dug deep and tried to battle back in the run to the line, but Calculator would not be denied and hit the line a neck in front as the even-money favorite. Third to eventual Grade II winner Lord Nelson (Pulpit) in his debut at Del Mar in July of 2014, Calculator was fourth behind subsequent MGSW Om (Munnings) and ahead of none other than Triple Crown winner American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) back there a month later. Second behind that eventual champion in the GI Del Mar Futurity and GI FrontRunner S. while still a maiden, he too missed that year's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile before earning his first career victory in the Sham. Back to Basics produced a filly by High Cotton in 2015 and was bred back to Scat Daddy. Calculator was a $132,000 OBSAPR juvenile and these same connections paid $50,000 to acquire his half-sister by Kantharos at that sale last year. Click for the Equibase.com chart or eld. Lifetime Record: GSW & MGISP, 6-2-2-1, $228,300.
