Bernardini's Cavorting Last to First in Personal Ensign

Cavorting | Sarah K. Andrew

Cavorting came charging from last to first in a loaded renewal of the GI Personal Ensign S. to score her third straight victory and collect another all expenses paid trip to Santa Anita for the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff. Breaking sharply from the outside post in this stellar five-horse field, the “TDN Rising Star” was relegated to last and shifted in to the rail by pilot Javier Castellano. MGISW I'm a Chatterbox dictated terms up front, carving out opening splits of :23.98 and :48.77 with three-time Grade I winner Curalina giving chase from second and GI Apple Blossom S. heroine Forever Unbridled tracking in third. The leading trio were in a line across the track turning for home with Cavorting four wide and just winding up to make her move. Forever Unbridled began to falter in early stretch and the chestnut duo of I'm a Chatterbox and Curalina continued to exchange blows at the head of affairs. Just as Curalina appeared to be getting the better of the pacesetter in the final sixteenth, Cavorting blew by them all to prove two turns was no problem in a thrilling renewal of the Personal Ensign.

“She ran terrific,” trainer Kiaran McLaughlin commented. “Javier [Castellano] got her back and the others went four-wide. He saved ground and I think that was the key to race. [Javier] gets along great with this filly. That was an important move he made into the first turn.”

As for what's next, the conditioner said, “Not sure if we'll go straight to the Breeders' Cup or run back at Belmont.”

“It worked out great. It was perfect; a dream trip,” Castellano remarked. “I like the way she did it today. She was amazing the way she ran against the best fillies in the country. The way she finished, coming from behind like that, was unbelievable. I give her all of the credit. It was small field but they are all Grade I fillies.”

Cavorting is now a perfect four-for-four at Saratoga, scoring her first victory over this surface as a 2-year-old in the 2014 GII Adirondack S. Scoring back-to-back victories in the GI Test S. and GII Prioress S. here last summer, the bay checked in fourth as the favorite in the GI Breeders' Cup F/M Sprint at Keeneland Oct. 31. Third when shipped west for Santa Anita's GI La Brea S. Dec. 26, the Stonestreet Stables colorbearer kicked off this term with a runner-up effort in Aqueduct's GIII Distaff H. Apr. 17. Stretched back out to a mile for the first time since finishing ninth in the previous year's GII Davona Dale S. in the GII Ruffian S. May 14, the 4-year-old romped by five lengths and followed suit with a convincing victory in Belmont's 1 1/16-mile GI Ogden Phipps S. June 11.

Pedigree Notes…

Promenade Girl, in foal to War Front, sold for $335,000 at the 2012 Keeneland November sale. The mare, a graded stakes winner and multiple Grade I placed, brought $1.125 million at that venue in 2007. Her 2-year-old Thirstforlife (Stay Thirsty) was tabbed a 'TDN Rising Star' after his debut victory at Churchill Downs in June and was subsequently third in the GII Best Pal S. She produced a colt by The Factor in 2015, a colt by Uncle Mo this year and was bred back to Bernardini.
