Barretts May Sale Wednesday

The Barretts May Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training will be held Wednesday starting at 2:00p.m. PST at Del Mar. A total of 91 horses are scheduled to sell during the one-day session.

“We expect to sell most of these horses,” Barretts General Manager Kim Lloyd said. “We have a lot of horses who fit the bill. We had a good turnout yesterday and a nice, safe preview and we were very pleased with that. They changed the track a little bit here at Del Mar so their banking process matches Santa Anita's. It's a little heavier, but very, very safe and I think everyone will be pleased during the summer meet. We expect to have a nice sale.”

Last year's sale saw 63 juveniles sell for a total of $2,597,400 with an average of $41,299. It was topped by a Candy Ride (Arg) colt, who summoned $290,000 from Kaleem Shah.

Lloyd hopes the momentum and spirited bidding seen at the Ocala Breeders Sales' spring auctions continues in Southern Calfiornia.

“The really good ones will sell very well,” Lloyd remarked. “There will be a lot of competition for them, but there is a market for all of them. We have a need for them out here so we expect to get them sold.”

Raul Reyes is one of the few Ocala horsemen to make the trip to California. His Kings Equine will be represented by a dozen juveniles, including three of the 15 :10 1/5 bullet workers (Hip 55, Hip 84 & Hip 87).

“Every time I bring horses to sell here, it feels like people have a need for horses,” Reyes offered. “You have to travel, but the reward has been good here at California which keeps me coming back.”

Reyes also likes having the sale at Del Mar, where it is being held for the third time.

“It's a very nice area and very comfortable to have them here,” the horseman said. “I enjoy myself here and the horses seem to like it.”
