Course record-setting G1 St James's Palace S. winner Barney Roy (GB) (Excelebration {Ire}-Alina {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) has been retired from racing and will stand at Darley's Dalham Hall Stud next year for £10,000.

Trained by Richard Hannon and acquired by Godolphin after winning his lone start at two, Barney Roy won the G3 Greenham S. in April before finishing second to Churchill (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G1 2000 Guineas. He turned the tables on that rival when winning the St James's Palace while breaking the course record by almost two seconds. Pitched against older horses for his final three outings, Barney Roy was beaten a nose by Ulysses (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G1 Coral-Eclipse, and was third behind that rival in the G1 Juddmonte International. He beat one home over the soft in the G1 Champion S. on Oct. 21.

Hannon said of Barney Roy, who is bred on the reverse cross of Frankel and Teofilo, “Barney Roy is by far the best colt I have trained and the most athletic horse I have seen. We look forward to seeing his yearlings at the sales.”

Sam Bullard, Director of Darley stallions, said, “Barney Roy was the leading miler of his generation, and ran with great credit over 10 furlongs too, beaten only a nose in the Eclipse in a time that would have won him almost any other running. If his stock inherit his zestful way of running and ferocious tenacity in the finish, they will surely do well. We are very proud of the enormous success of Exceed And Excel and his stallion sons and we are delighted to have the first of his grandsons join the Darley roster.”
