Australia's Beyond Reason Makes All In the Calvados

Beyond Reason and William Buick | Scoop Dyga

Already successful at Deauville in the July 28 G3 Prix Six Perfections, Godolphin's Beyond Reason (Ire) (Australia {GB}) returned to the Normandy venue on Saturday to dominate the G2 Shadwell Prix du Calvados from the front. As soon as she had gone two furlongs, the 8-5 favourite already had the contest in safe keeping with an uncontested lead underlining her class edge and William Buick enjoyed an easy time of it. Putting her rivals to the sword two out, the bay had three lengths to spare over Lagrandecatherine (Fr) (Pedro the Great) at the line, with Sicilia (GB) (Kingman {GB}) 1 1/4 lengths away in third. TDN Rising Star Tasleya (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who started as the 9-5 second favourite, was a disappointment in sixth. “She has come forward from her last race and it is better to ride her like that,” trainer Charlie Appleby said after a 2-year-old black-type double on the card. “She will now go for the [G1 Prix] Marcel Boussac [at ParisLongchamp Oct. 7] unless the ground is too soft. If it is, she'll be diverted to the [G1] Fillies' Mile [at Newmarket Oct. 12].” Carlos Laffon-Parias said of the free-running Sicilia, “She has run very well, but I knew that she would not stay as she is a six-furlong filly with a lot of speed and couldn't get cover. I wanted to try it, but now we have done she will probably go back to six for the [G3] Prix Eclipse [at Maisons-Laffitte Sept. 17].”

Beyond Reason, who was also fourth in Royal Ascot's Listed Chesham S. June 23 prior to her game defeat of Devant (Fr) (Showcasing {GB}) and TDN Rising Star Spirit of Brittany (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) in the Six Perfections, Beyond Reason is out of the GIII Gallorette H. winner No Explaining (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}), a granddaughter of the GSW Claire Bridge (Little Current). She in turn was responsible for the GII American H. winner and GI Eddie Read H. runner-up Bayamo (Ire) (Valanour {Ire}). This is also the family of the G1 St Leger and G1 Coronation Cup hero Silver Patriarch (Ire) (Saddlers' Hall {Ire}) and the G1 Grand Criterium-winning sire Wootton Bassett (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}). No Explaining also has a yearling colt by Gleneagles (Ire).
