Anothertwistafate Dominates El Camino Real Derby

Peter Redekop's Anothertwistafate (Scat Daddy) set all the pace and came home a resounding victor of the El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Saturday, earning 10 qualifying points towards the GI Kentucky Derby and an automatic spot in the GI Preakness S. in the process. The 6-5 favorite broke on top, was pressed by regally bred Bob Baffert pupil Kingly (Tapit) through fractions of :23.39 and :49.09, but shrugged off that foe at the top of the lane and sailed home unchallenged to win by a head-turning seven lengths. Kingly was second and More Ice (More Than Ready) was third.

Anothertwistafate was a lackluster ninth on debut at Santa Anita, but has not put a hoof wrong since returning to his home base at Golden Gate. He graduated by four lengths in his second start Dec. 9 and was a five-length winner of a Jan. 4 optional claimer last time out. For more, see Scat Daddy Colt Shows Promise at Golden Gate.

A $360,000 OBS June graduate (:10 1/5), Anothertwistafate is out of a half-sister to multiple Group 1 winner Nebraska Tornado (Storm Cat); U.S. GSW and French GISP Mirabilis (Lear Fan); and French Group 2 winner Burning Sun (Danzig). His now 2-year-old half-brother was a $65,000 KEESEP buyback last year. Dam Imprecation (First Defence), a daughter of French and U.S. GSW Media Nox (GB) (Lycius), produced an Into Mischief filly in 2018 and was bred back to Dialed In.

Another daughter of Media Nox, the 5-year-old Media Mischief (Into Mischief), was the sixth-priciest lot at this year's Keeneland January sale when acquired by Gabriel Duignan's Springhouse Farm for $450,000 in foal to Pioneerof the Nile . When interviewed after making that purchase, Duignan cited the potential of Anothertwistafate–who had won back to back at that point–as part of the appeal of Media Mischief.
