Tattersalls August Sale

Bunglejungleparty The Star at Tattersalls August

The second year of the Tattersalls August Sale kicked off its run at Park Paddocks in Newmarket on Tuesday. The clearance rate remained solid when compared to the 2020 renewal, which was inaugurated due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Of the 144 horses offered during the first session 127 (88%) were marked as sold for a gross of 1,459,200gns. The average of 11,490gns and median of 7,000gns were down 36% and 42% on 2020, respectively. Leading the way on day one was lot 169, Bunglejungleparty (Ire) (Bungle Inthejungle {GB}), who...

August Sale Enters Round Two

The Tattersalls August Sale was last year borne out of necessity-a three-month gap in the calendar lasting until early June making it difficult to assess the merits of stock for a horses-in-training sale only a month later, and Covid restrictions complicating sales logistics-but the fixture that was instituted last summer as a back-up plan for vendors and buyers proved an inspired concept. Demand for horses was high and figures wound up not far off the popular and well-established Tattersalls July and Autumn Horses-In-Training Sales. The August Sale saw 510 sold...

Tattersalls Releases August Catalogue

Tattersalls has released the catalogue for its two-day August Sale on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 comprising 458 lots that are a mixture of colts, geldings and fillies in and out of training and a small selection of broodmares. In addition to key support from leading owner/breeders like Ballydoyle, Godolphin, Juddmonte Farms, Shadwell Estate Company and many of the UK and Ireland's leading trainers, a trend among the leading lights in this year's catalogue is high-class French form. Gerard Augustin-Normand's Pretreville (Fr) (Acclamation {GB}) was a Group 3-winning miler last...

Saudi-bound Trio Heads Strong Final Day at Tattersalls

NEWMARKET, UK—Ted Voute may not have been at Tattersalls but he certainly made his presence felt online when securing the three most expensive horses of the August Sale, and four in total for 650,000gns, on behalf of a new owner in Saudi Arabia. Riyadh-based Najd Stud will race the quartet of colts and geldings, who have been bought with the primary aim of targeting Saudi's King's Cup series. Leading the way was the 105-rated Walkinthesand (Ire) (lot 699), a 4-year-old son of Footstepsinthesand (Ire), who was bought from Richard Hannon's...

Home Secretary Visits Tattersalls As Swindler Steals The Show

NEWMARKET, UK—Britain's Home Secretary Priti Patel MP paid a surprise visit to Tattersalls on Tuesday and will doubtless have had impressed upon her, by those depending on international trade ahead of the major sales of October and December, the importance of lifting quarantine restrictions for incoming buyers. In the current climate, it is impossible to imagine the packed sales ring at Tattersalls on a dark, crisp December evening as a potential blockbuster mare comes under the hammer. Hopefully we will return to those moments of thoroughbred theatre in time, and...

Demand Remains Strong For Form Horses

NEWMARKET, UK—The concept of a horses-in-training sale in August had already been welcomed and the initial response to the new three-day Tattersalls fixture seemed solid enough on Monday as, once again, a decent clearance rate of 84% was the most promising statistic of the day. With 200 horses put through the ring, 167 found new homes, bringing a first-day aggregate of 1,871,800gns. This is not the level of trade once normally associates with the higher-profile Autumn Horses-in-Training Sale, but it served a purpose and once again fed a consistently voracious...

New Tattersalls Fixture Gets Underway

There's nothing very familiar about this year, and in an ever-changing sales schedule, a new auction takes place this week at Tattersalls. The mixed August Sale was originally intended to take place over two days but, such was the demand for places, it has been extended to three, starting on Monday at Park Paddocks. That a sale consisting largely of horses in training has attracted such a large entry so soon after the traditional Tattersalls July Sale is not necessarily a positive sign for British racing. But while some owners...

Ocean Star Added To Tattersalls August Sale

Winning 2-year-old filly Ocean Star (Ire) (Adaay {Ire}) has been added to the Tattersalls August Sale as a wildcard as lot 199A. A £9,000 Tattersalls Ascot yearling purchase last year, Ocean Star was runner-up twice for trainer Archie Watson before breaking her maiden by 11 lengths at Chepstow six days ago. Ocean Star is out of the unraced New Approach (Ire) mare Miss Wicklow (Ire), and Forte Dei Marmi (GB), a Grade I winner in Canada, appears under the third dam.

Tattersalls to Host Inaugural August Sale

The first edition of the new Tattersalls August Sale, to be held at Park Paddocks in Newmarket on Aug. 25-26, was announced by the sales company on Wednesday. Comprised of primarily horses and fillies in training, the catalogue will also include some breeding stock and is in a similar mould to the Tattersalls July Sale. "The decision to stage an August Sale is entirely in response to the unique COVID-19 related circumstances we all find ourselves facing," said Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony. "We were acutely aware as we took entries...
