Kaleem Shah's Iliad (Ghostzapper–Little Swoon, by You and I) has been retired from racing after suffering an ankle injury during a workout last week.

“He had us dreaming for a while,” Shah said of the handsome bay who put himself on the GI Kentucky Derby trail with a win in the GII San Vicente S. and a runner-up effort behind Mastery (Candy Ride {Arg}) in the GII San Felipe S. “I think whatever was plaguing him was bugging him [when fifth] in the Santa Anita Derby.”

Iliad worked seven furlongs at Santa Anita Apr. 22 in 1:28.40, but came out of the drill injured, according to Shah.

“He had a very good work last week, but unfortunately he came out of it with his ankle twisted and swollen,” Shah said. “He does not surgery, but the vets have advised me that he won't be able to come back at the top even if we gave him all the time off and had surgery. So we decided to retire him.”

Iliad, who broke his maiden for trainer Bob Baffert at Los Alamitos last December, captured the San Vicente S. Feb. 12 in his first start for Doug O'Neill. He won two of five starts and earned $247,345.

Stud plans are still to be determined.
