British-Based Jockeys Receive German Derby Call-Up

Hollie Doyle, Frankie Dettori, and Richard Kingscote have been deputised to ride three of trainer Markus Klug's seven entries in Sunday's G1 Deutsches Derby. A three-time winner of the Hamburg showpiece, Klug booked Doyle for the undefeated Group 3-winning filly Wagnis (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) after watching her win the G1 Prix de Diane with Nashwa (GB) (Frankel {GB}).

“I was in Germany but I watched the race and she [Doyle] was good, very, very good,” he said.

Klug also has the Derby favourite in So Moonstruck (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) and has retained the services of Dettori after his stable jockey Andrasch Starke earned a 14-day suspension. The Italian was available now that he is on sabbatical from trainers John and Thady Gosden.

“My stable jockey, Andrasch Starke, cannot ride, we were searching for a good jockey from England to ride and we are lucky that Frankie can ride him–I'm happy,” Klug added of the colt, who ran second in the G2 Sparkasse KolnBonn Union-Rennen earlier this month.

“So Moonstruck has very good form, at Cologne he was a little bit early in front and so he was beaten by a head. He is a very good horse and I think he has a good shot, he's improving with each start.”

Fresh off piloting Desert Crown (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) to victory in the G1 Cazoo Derby, Richard Kingscote has been recruited for the grey filly Mylady (Ger) (The Grey Gatsby {Ire}), second in the German 1000 Guineas.

“She's a very good filly, she won a trial in April against the colts, a Group 3,” said Klug.

“It's a little bit difficult to say that she stays the distance, she has never run further than 1700 metres. I think 2000 is no problem for her, 2400, I'm not sure. I think 2000 and 2200 is perfect for her and she has a lot of class, she's a good filly, maybe it is possible.

“I have seven horses in the race, some with good chances, we will see!”

Another overseas jockey with a ride in the 2400-metre race is Cieren Fallon, Jr., on trainer Henk Grewe's Assistent (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}).
