X Y Jet Soars in Mr. Prospector

X Y Jet | Leslie Martin

X Y Jet (Kantharos), a hard-luck second in the GIII Hutcheson S. at Gulfstream in January, turned Saturday's GIII Mr. Prospector S. into a one-horse race with a powerful front-running display to earn his first stakes victory. Emerging with the early advantage after an opening quarter in :21.92, the 2-1 shot started to get away from them after a :44.92 half and hit the top of the lane with a large cushion. Pilot Emisael Jaramillo gave him a few reminders just to be safe, but nobody was ever getting to X Y Jet, who hit the line 9 1/2 lengths to the good in a snappy 1:08.56. Longshot Grande Shores (Black Mambo) tagged C. Zee (Elusive Bluff) for second.

“I had a lot of confidence in the horse today,” said Jaramillo. “I was impressed with the way he ran last time and I'm even more impressed with him today.”

Trained by Antonio Sano at the beginning of his career, X Y Jet was transferred to Jorge Navarro around this time last year, and settled for a neck second in Tampa's Pasco S. some 51 weeks ago. After his close call to Barbados (Speightstown) in the Hutcheson last January, he was eased in the GII Swale S. in March. The grey resurfaced to take a Monmouth optional claimer Sept. 20, and aired by 4 1/2 lengths Nov. 11 at Gulfstream Park West, defeated the re-opposing Weekend Hideaway (Speightstown) in the process.

“We always thought he was a nice horse last year. I guess we rushed him into things last year and he wasn't prepared to be doing the things that we're doing right now. I think he's a nice horse. My next Private Zone (Macho Uno),” said trainer Jorge Navarro, referring to this year's GI Forego S. winner and GI Breeders' Cup Sprint runner-up, who was transferred from him before finishing fifth as the favorite in the GI Cigar Mile H. Nov. 28.

“[Last year in the Swale] he stumbled real bad and grabbed his quarter real bad, and came out with a small chip,” the conditioner revealed. “I sent him to the farm and they discovered the chip. We did the surgery and took our time with him. We got him back about five months ago. We've taken our time with him. That's what we're going to do with him, take our time. This is a nice horse. A 3-year-old, doing this, beating older horses? We're going to take a look at how he comes out. Hopefully, everything comes out good and we'll go from there.”

The winner's dam produced a yearling filly by Poseidon's Warrior and was bred back to Big Drama.
