Williams Eyeing Melbourne Cup 2017

Almandin | Bronwen Healy

A day removed from his record-breaking fifth G1 Melbourne Cup win as an owner with Almandin (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}), Lloyd Williams confirmed that his desire to win more Cups is as strong as ever.

“There's never enough,” Lloyd said at a press conference at his Macedon Lodge Stables on Wednesday. “It's very elusive.”

“We're trying [to win it] every day,” he added. “Starting tomorrow we're trying to win the 2017 Cup, but whether that's just a dream [we don't know yet].”

Williams has admitted to spending plenty on Cups contenders since the late 1980s, many of those, like Almandin, being European imports. Williams no doubt is already working on loading up his stable with Cup hopefuls for 2017, but he said he couldn't be sure the 6-year-old gelding Almandin would be among them.

“I've got no idea, I couldn't possibly tell you that now,” Williams said. “The horse has got no idea and we've got no idea. Time will tell.”
