Twirling Candy Colt Wins Dee War

Viren's Army | Racing Post

Third in the G3 Premio Guido Berardelli over nine furlongs in November after winning a nursery over that trip at Nottingham the previous month, Viren's Army provided a boost to the Oaks-bound So Mi Dar (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) having filled third spot behind her in Epsom's 10-furlong Investec Derby Trial on his 3-year-old bow Apr. 20. Settled in fifth early by Silvestre de Sousa, the bay had a clear run into the straight and first run on Linguistic and after earning a narrow lead with a furlong remaining dug deep as that favourite and Housesofparliament challenged hard on either side to win the three-way battle. “He is very genuine and answered every question,” his rider said. “He would probably appreciate a bit more give in the ground. They went a very decent gallop and I was in the right place at the right time.” Middleham Park Racing's Tim Palin added, “He's got talent, make no mistake. He's not a hype horse, he's just a tough and solid operator. Normally when we send a horse on a mission we have something up our sleeve, but this was kind of his Derby. We'll give it some thought, but the [G3] Tercentenary S. [at Royal Ascot June 16] and the [G3] Gallinule S. [at The Curragh May 22] may be options.” The runner-up's trainer John Gosden was far from downcast after just losing out with the well-back Linguistic. “I'm really happy with his run. He'd only run on straight tracks, so he learnt a lot today,” he said. “He got a bit further back than we wanted, but I liked the way he finished. He wants a mile and a half now. We'll look at a race like the [Listed] Cocked Hat [S. at Goodwood May 20].” Coolmore's UK representative Kevin Buckley said of the third, “I think Housesofparliament ran a good race. He got hemmed in a little bit, but he ran well.”
