Union Jack Flying High as Small Breeders Strike on the Big Stage

ASCOT, UK -- There may be cause for concern when it comes to the tumbling number of foals bred in Britain but, with Ascot festooned with the Union Jack, the first three races represented a terrific result for the United Kingdom, falling to horses bred in England, Wales and Scotland.  In front of the King and Queen, first Docklands then Gstaad and American Affair testified to the strength of Thoroughbreds produced in the country, with British-based Irishmen Richard Kent and John McGrandles being the breeders behind the first two Group...

Massaat's Docklands Prevails in Queen Anne Thriller

There is always a story at Royal Ascot and this year's meeting opener, the G1 Queen Anne Stakes, delivered an immediate slice of drama as Harry Eustace trainee Docklands (Massaat) provided the Newmarket conditioner with a thrilling first Group 1 triumph, by a pixel, despite Australian rider Mark Zahra dropping his whip in the closing stages of the straight one-mile test. The Queen Anne is a "Win and You're In" for the GI Breeders' Cup Mile at Del Mar this coming November. Last year's runner-up, who annexed the Britannia Handicap...

“It Was My First Time On The Irish Stallion Trail And I'd Fully Recommend It To Anyone”

Top bloodstock agent Mags O'Toole, Mickley Stud boss Richard Kent and Ana O'Brien were some of the key industry figures to give this year's Irish Stallion Trail the thumbs up.  For Kent, this weekend marked his first time attending the trail, and it could prove an expensive trip for the Cork native who is now based in Shropshire, after he pencilled in a host of the farm's best mares to visit some of the stallions he was most taken with.  He said, "We started off with Tally-Ho Stud on Friday...

Classic Form To The Fore At Goffs London Sale

The Goffs London Sale scaled new heights in 2022 when G1 Derby runner-up Hoo Ya Mal (GB) (Territories {Ire}) sold to Gai Waterhouse, Adrian Bott and Johnny McKeever for £1.2 million, while last year that sum was very nearly matched when the G3 Marble Hill S. winner Givemethebeatboys was bought by Bronson Racing for £1.1 million, less than 24 hours before his commendable fourth-place finish in the G2 Coventry S. at Royal Ascot. Those results leave the 2024 edition of the London Sale with quite the act to follow, but...

Seven Days: A Pedigree Nutcase in Paris

There is something wonderfully refreshing about John Hayes. He stands at least 6'6'' tall with size 15 'lucky boots' and a towering personality to match. Prior to watching Jannah Rose (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), the filly he bred from his beloved mare Sophie Germain (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}), win the G1 Coolmore St Mark's Basilica Prix Saint-Alary, he serenaded guests of her owner Al Shira'aa Farms with a ditty about a cross-dressing gold-digger. It's the kind of theme that could so easily see people cancelled these days, but there could be...

Record Foal Draft For G1 Vendors Mickley Stud

From bringing its largest draft of 26 foals to the Tattersalls December Sale in 2020, Mickley Stud's consignment for this week has almost doubled in size again to 50 weanlings.  It may be time-consuming for prospective buyers to work their way through this batch of youngsters down in the Solario Yard but it could also prove worthwhile. In 2015, Mickley's Richard Kent and his co-breeder, the late Lady Caroline Lonsdale, brought a Havana Gold (Ire) foal to sell who went on to become the Group 1-winning sprinter and young Whitsbury...
