Pimlico Special

Barry Weisbord with Wayne and Laurie Lukas
Letter to the Editor: Thanks for the Support, Coach

In 1990, Frank DeFrancis and I introduced the idea which would become the American Championship Racing Series to D. Wayne Lukas. He had come to Pimlico with some top stakes horses to train post-Derby, as he often did. He won the Pimlico Special that year with eventual Horse of the Year Criminal Type. It was only 10 years since his first Triple Crown win at the 1980 Preakness, but he was now at the top of his profession. At Saratoga later that summer, Wayne and I had a lengthy conversation...

Graded Winner, Mutliple Grade I-Placed Pyrenees Retired

Pyrenees (Into Mischief--Our Khrysty, by Newfoundland), winner of the GIII Pimlico Special Stakes and runner-up in the GI Stephen Foster Stakes and GI Jockey Club Gold Cup in 2024, has been retired from racing, according to Adam Corndorf, who bred and raced the horse in partnership with his mother Bonnie Baskin under their Blue Heaven Farm banner. A homebred son of Grade III winner Our Khrysty, purchased by Blue Heaven for $600,000 in foal to Tiznow at the 2011 Fasig-Tipton November Sale, Pyrenees broke his maiden by 4 1/2 lengths...

Awesome Aaron An Upset Winner Of The Pimlico Special

Now a winner from six furlongs to 1 3/16 miles, Awesome Aaron continued his positive trend for trainer Norm Casse with an off-the-pace upset in the GIII Pimlico Special Stakes. After a career spent at nearly every level of racing, the 6-year-old gelded son of Practical Joke proved his 5 3/4-length roll in an allowance/optional claimer at Oaklawn last time out was no fluke (nor was the 104 Beyer Speed Figure that accompanied it). That win on Apple Blossom day Apr. 12, his first since getting claimed for $40,000 at...

Into Mischief's Pyrenees Scales The Heights In Pimlico Special

A well-backed 5-1 while making his stakes debut in Friday's GIII Pimlico Special S. over the Preakness S. course and distance, Blue Heaven Farm homebred Pyrenees (Into Mischief) was delivered in the nick of time by Kentucky Derby-winning jockey Brian Hernandez, Jr. to complete a memorable stakes three-timer for the Cherie DeVaux barn. The beautifully bred 4-year-old, who capped a three-race winning streak--with Hernandez, Jr. aboard each time--courtesy of a three-length allowance victory over a sloppy Keeneland main track Apr. 12, was eased back and settled not far from a...

Funeral services were held Saturday for Peter Sherman Willmott, an owner and breeder of Thoroughbreds who served for nearly two decades as a trustee and chairman of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) and as a steward of The Jockey Club. Among the top horses that Willmott raced either in his own name, in partnerships, or as Willmott Stables, were Eddington, the winner of...

Black-Eyed Susan Card Kicks Off Preakness Weekend

BALTIMORE, MD--The past two weeks has seen the kind of drama that one might expect in soap opera, laden with twists and turns that have left even the most seasoned turfwriters scratching their heads in disbelief. However, despite the all head-snapping headlines, the days leading up to this year's Preakness at Pimlico were business as usual. Thursday morning's activity matched the Baltimore weather, brisk and clear, with everything seemingly running without any major glitches. Following a brief hiatus because of the COVID pandemic, the morning tours were back in force...

First Captain Turns In 'Special' Performance at Pimlico

'TDN Rising Star' First Captain (Curlin) looked to have it all to do with a quarter-mile to go in Friday's GIII Pimlico Special S., but he called on his class in the final 50 yards to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Adding blinkers for the first time off a disappointing seventh in the GI Carter H. Apr. 9, the $1.5-million joint-topper at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale was off alertly and settled in fifth position passing under the wire for the first time as recent Excelsior S. runner-up...

Pletcher Saddles Strong Pair in Pim Special

Todd Pletcher saddles a pair of strong contenders in Friday's GIII Pimlico Special S. in Vindictive (Uncle Mo) and Untreated (Nyquist). A two-time winner at Saratoga last year, the well-related Vindictive closed 2021 with a third in Aqueduct's Discovery S. Nov. 27. He kicked off this season with an optional claimer win at that venue Mar. 25. His stablemate Untreated captured an Aqueduct allowance in November and won a muddy optional claimer at that venue a month later. Sixth behind recent GII Alysheba S. romper Olympiad (Speightstown) in the GIII...
