Uncle Heavy Pulls The Upset in the Withers

Pennsylvania-bred Uncle Heavy (Social Inclusion) shipped up from his base at Parx for an outfit capable of pulling a surprise on this circuit and did just that, nailing El Grande O (Take Charge Indy) right on the wire by a nose to earn 20 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby in Saturday's $250,000 GIII Withers S. at Aqueduct. Drawn one from the outside over a rain-affected strip that was putting a demand on stamina, the hulking bay, off at 9-1, raced in the four path, but with cover...

MGISW Caravel Retired, Date With Justify Scheduled

GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint heroine Caravel (Mizzen Mast) was retired to Kentucky's Hunter Valley Farm by the ownership group of Qatar Racing, Madaket Stables and Marc Detampel, and will be bred for the 2024 season to Justify, as first reported on the Lancaster Farming website by Mid-Atlantic Horse correspondent Sam Cavalieri. Bred by Elizabeth Merryman and raised on her farm in Coatesville, Pennsylvania, Caravel is heading to the breeding shed after she RNA'd for $2.4 million at the Keeneland November Sale. Liam's Map Filly Shows Class in Saratoga's Caress

Despite never having won against open stakes company, Roses for Debra nonetheless installed the 8-5 choice to best four others in Saturday's GIII Caress S. at Saratoga. Undefeated in a pair of starts since joining Christophe Clement's string earlier this season, the Pennsylvania-bred filly made short work of her rivals, coming from off the pace to win by an authoritative victory over Wakanaka (Ire). MGSW Our Flash Drive (Ghostzapper) got off to an awkward start, spotting the field a couple of lengths as 2-1 chance Bubble Rock took control while...

Wanamaker's, PHBA to Hold Second PA-Bred Sale

Wanamaker's will host the second annual Pennsylvania-bred Sale in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association (PHBA), with bidding scheduled from Dec. 4-8. Pennsylvania-bred weanlings, yearlings, broodmares, and horses of racing age will all be offered. "I think the Pennsylvania-bred online auction hosted by Wanamaker's is just one more added benefit to the Pennsylvania program," said Brian Sanfratello, executive secretary for the PHBA. "It gives some of our breeders the ability to sell their horses without all the costs involved in sending them to a regular sale." Entries for the...

Liam's Map Filly Makes It Three Straight at Presque Isle

7th-Presque Isle Downs, $45,046, Alw (NW3L), Opt. Clm ($40,000), 9-21, 3yo/up, f/m, 6f (AWT), 1:08.64, ft, 2 3/4 lengths. ROSES FOR DEBRA (f, 3, Liam's Map--Essential Rose, by Bernardini) would be perfect but for a debut demotion at this venue May 23 when two lengths best, only to be taken down for drifting in and causing interference. A clear-cut maiden winner second time out June 9, the gray filly was last seen posting a facile 3 3/4-length triumph in the state-bred restricted Malvern Rose S. over an extra sixteenth of...

For Chub Wagon, Tougher Spots Will Have to Wait

Owner-breeder Danny Lopez doesn't know how good Chub Wagon (Hey Chub), the 2021 Pennsylvania-Bred of the Year and 2021 Parx Horse of the Year, is. That's the way it is when you have a filly who is 11-for-12 lifetime and has won seven stakes, but has never faced graded stakes company. Is he curious to find out? Not at all. "I'd rather be a big fish in a little pond," said Lopez, who co-owns Chub Wagon with George Chestnut. "We've made a lot of money ($593,600) with her and, by...
