The Producers: Part 1, Locked and Bloodstock

In this new series, we'll spotlight the dams and connections of some of 2025's racetrack superstars. First up, we'll set the scene by explaining our objective and search for trends, then for a curtain raiser we'll kick off the series by checking in with the dam of one of the top older horses of 2025. Keeneland Breeder Spotlight: Winchester Farm Uncovering Gems From All Corners

Their first real introduction was at the 1997 Keeneland September Sale. Naoya was working with Dr. Dave Fishback at Hagyard and Marie was scouting yearlings for her fledgling Hong Kong-based bloodstock agency. Things got off to a rather awkward start when Marie approached the Hagyard team to hand off her vet's list and Naoya asked to take a look at the hip numbers. Not knowing Naoya worked for the veterinary practice, Marie guessed he was a rival buyer fishing for intel. "I was not very nice to him," Marie admitted...

Keeneland September-Bound Colt Offers 'Golden' Opportunity

The story of the legendary three-times Hong Kong Horse of the Year Golden Sixty (Aus) could scarcely be more international in nature. The bay was produced by an American-bred daughter of Distorted Humor who was raced to Group 2 success in Ireland, was sold on to Australian interests and was subsequently bred to the outstanding Medaglia d'Oro, who was on his dual-hemisphere missions at the time. Sold as a yearling on the Gold Coast in Queensland and as a ready-to-run prospect in New Zealand, Golden Sixty plied his trade in...

California Memory: The Little Horse That Could…And Did

A good horse can come from anywhere, can come in all shapes and sizes. Perhaps no horse in the history of the Hong Kong turf embodies that idea more than the diminutive, but wildly talented California Memory (Highest Honor {Fr}--Kalpita, by Spinning World). Brookdale Farm's Fred Seitz acquired Kalpita privately after she was led out unsold on a bid of 48,000gns at Tattersalls December in 2005 and the mare foaled a grey colt Mar. 2, 2006. Hailing from the female family of champions Bosra Sham (Woodman) and Hector Protector (Woodman),...

Yoshida: Virtual Auction A Step Forward For Industry

By nature of circumstance, Inglis will host its flagship Australian Easter Yearling Sale on Apr. 7 and 8 in virtual form. While many view this as an inconvenient but necessary way for trade to get done, Marie Yoshida sees it differently. Yoshida, who is French-born, resides in Kentucky and does business globally, said some of her Hong Kong-based clients partook in Inglis's test auction on Friday. And she had very positive feedback. "William Inglis has done an amazing job," she said. "They've harnessed the top technology, and they listened to...
