Will The Full-Brother to Sottsass be the Star of the Show at Arqana?

It has become a familiar occasion to open the Arqana August catalogue and find an offering from the remarkably consistent broodmare Starlet's Sister (Ire), whose progeny have shone for years here for the perennial leading consignor, Ecurie des Monceaux. Most recently, the Dubawi (Ire) filly Pure Dignity (GB) brought €2,500,000 from Oliver St. Lawrence in 2020, and Parliament (GB), a colt by Fastnet Rock (Aus), sold for €700,000 in 2019. Pure Dignity just won her first start for Roger Varian. But the 2022 offering might be the most exciting yet:...

Powell Discusses Changes to Arqana Yearling Sales Calendar

Careful readers of the Arqana website--or those caught booking a house too early in Deauville for the summer sales--will have noticed some significant changes in the French sales calendar this year. For the past several years, the two-day select, or Part I, yearlings in the August sale sold in the evening, then were followed by an all-day open session, and then the V2, a sale targeted to more regional buyers. In all, three different classes of yearlings were sold over four days. For 2022, the Arqana team has taken the...

DEAUVILLE, France--A strong opening day of the Arqana October Sale saw a colt by Camelot (GB) top proceedings at €440,000, bought late in the session by Nicolas de Watrigant of Mandore International Agency on behalf of MV Magnier. Consigned by the leading vendor Ecurie des Monceaux, lot 209 is a half-brother to the listed Prix Michel Houyvet winner Big Blue (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). No Starlet But Monceaux Still Aiming For The Stars

Since 2012, Ecurie des Monceaux has had a stranglehold of the top consignor spot at the Arqana August Yearling Sale. The only unusual thing about last year was the fact that the auction was not actually held in August, with Covid complications forcing it to be renamed the Select Sale and held in mid-September. Otherwise, it was business as usual for Henri Bozo and his team, who sold 32 yearlings for €10,682,000.  Almost a quarter of that sum was given for the Dubawi (Ire) filly out of one of Monceaux's...

Lions Ready To Roar At Arqana

Buyers at this weekend's Arqana August Yearling Sale will have the chance to get their hands on an extremely rare commodity when eight yearlings from the lone crop of 2018 Cartier Horse of the Year Roaring Lion go up for sale in Deauville. Qatar Racing's Roaring Lion was euthanized in August 2019 in New Zealand after suffering several bouts of colic. The grey had not long before finished covering a debut book at Tweenhills Stud in Britain that resulted in 90 registered foals. David Redvers, racing manager to Qatar Racing...

Bozo: “It's Going To Be A Year Of Opportunity”

As the leading consignor at the Arqana August Yearling Sale for eight years running, the team at Ecurie des Monceaux knows a thing or two about the importance of drawing a diverse, international assortment of buyers for the blueblooded yearlings on display. Not only did Monceaux breed and sell the top three lots at the 2019 edition of Arqana's flagship sale; it also offered the sale's only two seven-figure yearlings, which went through the ring back-to-back and sold to Godolphin (a €1.625-million Dubawi {Ire} filly now named Philomene {Ire} who...

More Stars Arriving At Monceaux

In the midst of a global pandemic, Thoroughbred enthusiasts can find some respite in the excitement of the arrival of the future stars of the sport. The team at Ecurie des Monceaux, in the Pays d'Auge region of France, celebrated an especially exciting addition overnight on Wednesday when its budding blue hen Starlet's Sister (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) produced a bay filly by Dubawi (Ire). Racing as a homebred for William Preston, Starlet's Sister failed to win in four tries for trainer Alain de Royer Dupre. She was a full-sister, though,...
