Strong Entries For Sprint Cup

Harry Angel and Brando could clash again at Haydock | Racing Post

The British sprinting scene has served up some memorable clashes and finishes this season and another all star cast looks ready to assemble for the G1 32Red Sprint Cup at Haydock Sept. 9. Last time out Group 1 winners Harry Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and Brando (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) head the 32 entries for the six furlong event and could be joined by the likes of last year's winner Quiet Reflection (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), G1 Commonwealth Cup winner Caravaggio (Scat Daddy), G1 Diamond Jubilee S. winner The Tin Man (GB) (Equiano {GB}) and the top class Limato (Ire) (Tagula {Ire}). One horse who has yet to make the breakthrough at Group 1 level is Magical Memory (Ire) (Zebedee {GB}) but he is still an intended starter in the race according to Sam Hoskins, spokesman for owners Kennet Valley Thoroughbreds. The Charlie Hills trained 5-year-old finished fourth to Brando in the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville Aug. 6 and Hoskins said, “Andrea [Atzeni] got off Magical Memory at Deauville and said the six and a half furlongs stretched him a bit. He has run well in the Sprint Cup before and deserves to take his chance again. It is going to be a really good race with Harry Angel, Brando and the likes, but you never really know with these sprints. Hoskins also has one eye on another upcoming potential target for the grey gelding. “It is interesting that the handicapper has dropped him a couple of pounds to 110 because he is also in the Ayr Gold Cup. If he ran well at Haydock, we could back him up two weeks later at Ayr,” he added.
