Setback for Derby Favourite Luxembourg

Aidan O'Brien's leading G1 Epsom Derby chance Luxembourg suffered a setback  | Racingfotos.com

Luxembourg (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), the short-priced favourite for the Cazoo Derby, is not certain to line up at Epsom after meeting with a setback, Aidan O'Brien has revealed. Third in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket last Saturday, Luxembourg had been a general 2-1 chance for Derby glory before O'Brien revealed the news to the Racing Post on Friday.

He said, “Luxembourg was a little bit off after his canter this morning. He was a little lame on his off-hind.”

O'Brien added, “We are not sure of the reason why at this stage, but we wanted to let everybody know with the Derby coming up. Hopefully in a couple of days, we will know more and we will issue an update then.”

O'Brien is the winningmost trainer in Derby history and will be bidding for a ninth success in the race on June 4. The master of Ballydoyle won his first Derby with Galileo (Ire) in 2001.

With doubts hovering over the participation of Luxembourg in this year's race, O'Brien's Changingoftheguard (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), an impressive winner of the G3 Chester Vase on Wednesday, was shortened up by most betting firms into a general 7-1 chance.
