Regal Ransom Succumbs to Colic

Regal Ransom | Darley

Regal Ransom (Distorted Humor–Kelli's Ransom, by Red Ransom) was euthanized Tuesday after suffering complications from colic, Darley announced Wednesday. The nine-year-old stallion, a half-brother to Grade I winner Devil May Care (Malibu Moon), was a $675,000 Fasig-Tipton Florida graduate. Racing for Godolphin, he won the 2009 G2 UAE Derby and GII Super Derby and he retired to Darley's Jonabell Farm in Kentucky in 2012 with earnings of almost $1.9 million.

Regal Ransom was represented by his first crop of runners this year and currently has eight winners, including stakes-placed Freaky Kiki and Lemnos (Tur).

“We are very saddened by the loss of Regal Ransom,” said Darley America COO Dan Pride. “These situations are never easy, but we are thankful that it was handled quickly and that he didn't suffer. He served Sheikh Mohammed and our team well, and he will be missed.”

Regal Ransom will be buried at Jonabell Farm.
