Reflections on 2016

Lady Aurelia | Racing Post

Over the next week the team of Editors of TDN Europe/International will look back on 2016 and pick their most memorable racing moment of the year. We continue today with V.P. International Operations, Gary King.

LADY AURELIA, G2 QUEEN MARY S., ASCOT

Lady Aurelia (Scat Daddy)'s devastating performance in the G2 Queen Mary S. at Royal Ascot definitely captured the imagination. It's impossible to fly under the radar as a Wesley Ward-trained juvenile, but the 'TDN Rising Star' more than lived up to the billing. It was almost Frankel-esque in many ways (video). You could watch the replay a hundred times and not tire of it. Thankfully, she went on to cement this reputation by winning the G1 Darley Prix Morny, and with a gallant third in the G1 Connolly's Red Mills Cheveley Park S.

Lady Aurelia's accomplishments are testament to her ambitious owners (Stonestreet Stables, George Bolton & Peter Leidel), trainer (Wesley Ward) and to her late sire, Scat Daddy. From relatively humble beginnings, Scat Daddy obviously achieved extraordinary results over the last few years. And it will be nice to see Lady Aurelia and Ballydoyle's Caravaggio fly the flag for him in some major European races next year.
