Racing Action Escalates Sunday

Call The Wind returns on Sunday | Saudi Cup

As European racing edges nearer to June's baptism of fire, Sunday sees an escalation of the preliminaries with the G2 Kronimus-Grosser Preis der Badischen Wirtschaft taking centre stage of the action across Germany and France. Baden-Baden's truncated Spring meeting concludes here, with Stall Salzburg's Quest the Moon (Ger) (Sea the Moon {Ger}) favourite for the feature. Successful in the G3 Prix du Lys at ParisLongchamp last May, the bay followed that effort with a fourth in Hamburg's G1 Deutsches Derby and third in the G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis at Munich in July before flattening out when last of five in the G2 Prix Niel back at ParisLongchamp in September. He meets the 2017 G1 Deutsches Derby and G1 Preis von Europa hero Windstoss (Ger) (Shirocco {Ger}), who was third to the re-opposing Itobo (Ger) (Areion {Ger}) in this 12 months ago and who warmed up for this latest attempt with a second in Cologne's G2 Carl Jaspers-Preis May 8.

Perhaps more intriguingly, the fixture's G3 Racebets.de-Derby-Trial Fruhjahrspreis offers Deutsches Derby prospects the chance to get on that particular road. Gestut Ittlingen's Palao (Ger) (Champs Elysees {GB}) will provide further clues as to the status of Wonderful Moon (Ger) (Sea the Moon {Ger}) whom he trailed when third in the May 8 G3 Cologne Classic. Henk Grewe's formidable stable is represented by the impression 10-furlong Mulheim maiden winner Adrian (Ger) (Reliable Man {GB}) and Eckhard Sauren's Only the Brave (Fr) (Iffraaj {GB}), who beat some representatives of the major French stables on his sole start in testing ground over nine furlongs at ParisLongchamp in October. Over at Deauville, the stayers get their opportunity in the G3 Prix de Barbeville where George Strawbridge's Call the Wind (GB) (Frankel {GB}) returns to home turf after his success in Riyadh's Longines Turf H. Feb. 29.
