The Racehorse Owner-Trainer Prep class will be offered by The Elite Program Inc. and Dr. C. Reid “Mac” McLellan on the Ocala Breeders' Sales grounds Mar. 19-22. The four-day class provides instruction to pass a trainer exam including medication and other rule updates. Expanded by one day from last year, the updated version of the program's Trainers' Exam Prep Class also includes methods and philosophy of training racehorses. The class is open to anyone interested in learning about horses and horseracing. Owners, jockeys, grooms and handicappers participate alongside participants desiring to take a trainers' licensing exam.
“This new version of the class starts with a discussion of options for acquiring racehorses,” said McLellan. “We also cover preparation for young racehorses, and improving performance of older racehorses followed by options for post-racing careers. Intertwined is discussion of relative rules of racing that influence and, in some cases, govern application of training methods. These rules are in flux so we will also discuss rule changes and how trainers and owners can make sure that their horses receive the best care within a volatile, changing rule environment.”
The class format will start with half day Thursday, Mar. 19 from 1:00 to 5:00pm and continues Friday, Saturday and Sunday 8:00 am to 3:00 pm.
Tuition for 25 hours of interactive discussions about racing, racehorses and the Rules of Racing is $349 if paid online 10 days prior to start of class. Tuition after that time and at door (if space is available) is $400. The class, particularly the first three days, qualifies as continuing education for previous Trainers' Exam Prep Class participants. Previous TExP participants, as well as Groom Elite 101 certified grooms, receive a $100 prior participation credit. TOBA, FTBOA and the TTA members receive a $25 discount off tuition costs.
