+ANCIENT WARFARE (c, 2, Quality Road–Summer Savory {GSP}, by Horse Chestnut {SAf}), sent off at 5-1 in this unveiling, was unhurried early, biding his time near the back of the pack as Happy Wanderer (War Chant) ticked off opening splits of :21.81 and :45.81 on the front end. Progressing up the fence to sit second turning for home, the bay colt slipped through on the fence to seize control in the stretch and kicked clear to score by 2 1/2 lengths. Happy Wanderer held on for second, a half-length in front of favored El Talento (Big Brown), who closed late after being forced to steady in traffic on the turn and in upper stretch. The winner's dam, second in the 2011 GIII Virginia Oaks and a half-sister to Arthur Hancock's homebred MGSW Owsley (Harlan), has a yearling filly by Lemon Drop Kid and produced a Union Rags filly May 11 of this year. She was bred back to Broken Vow. Ancient Warfare, a $100,000 KEESEP yearling, was purchased by Justin Casse on behalf of Joe Minor's JSM Equine for $250,000 after working a furlong in :10 flat at this year's OBSAPR sale.
