Protectionist Back With Wohler

Andreas Wohler | Racing Post

Protectionist (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}), winner of the G1 Melbourne Cup in 2014, has returned to trainer Andreas Wohler in Germany and will make a return to the races in the coming weeks. The now 6-year-old won the Melbourne Cup under Wohler's care before being transferred to local trainer Kris Lees by owner Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock. Protectionist failed to thrive training Down Under, however, failing to hit the board in eight starts in 2015.

“He arrived back here in December of last year,” said Wohler, who also trained Protectionist to wins in the 2014 G2 Prix Kergorlay and G2 Hansa Preis. “We took things easy for a while, but I am quite happy with him now.”

“He is still owned by Australian Bloodstock,” Wohler noted. “He didn't really like the conditions there, so they brought him back and hopefully there'll be some nice races for him here. He could run in a conditions race somewhere in around three weeks' time, and we are just taking things step-by-step. He is not back at his best level yet and we will just see how things go.”
