Portelli Pleased With Slipper Winner

She Will Reign | Bronwen Healy

Trainer Gary Portelli told Racing.com that She Will Reign (Aus) (Manhattan Rain {Aus})'s effort when second in a Warwick Farm trial on Friday morning was “exactly what we wanted to see.”

The G1 Golden Slipper winner, who is bound for the inaugural A$10-million The Everest on Oct. 14, set a fast pace in the 800 metre heat before allowing stablemate Single Bullet (Aus) (Not A Single Doubt {Aus}) to join her in the last 100 metres. The pair finished 10 lengths clear of champion sprinter Chautauqua (Aus) (Encosta de Lago {Aus}), who continued to finish strongly past the line. That 7-year-old gelding is the favourite for The Everest.

“We weren't out to have a hard gallop with the filly today,” Portelli told Racing.com. “It was more a stretch of the legs and just to get her back into the routine. [Jockey] Ben [Melham] said she felt like she's strengthened, she's got wider through the chest and bigger through the neck. She gave him an amazing feeling, he said that he came to the corner with a lap full of horse and he would have given them the slip around the corner if it had been a race.”

She Will Reign will trial again in two weeks before she makes her 3-year-old debut in the G1 Moir S. at Moonee Valley on Sept. 29.
