Oxley One-Two in Edgewood

La Coronel (outside) | Coady

La Coronel, part of an even-money entry with fellow GSW Dream Dancing, rallied late to lead home a John Oxley/Mark Casse one-two finish in the Edgewood. Marooned in post 11, the dark bay broke alertly and ran three wide in mid-pack as previously undefeated “TDN Rising Star” Stallion Heiress (Exchange Rate) clicked off an opening quarter in :23.75 and a half in :48.68. Inching closer on the backstretch run, La Coronel seemed to be stalling a bit in fourth as her stablemate Dream Dancing, who rode the rail most of the way, punched through emphatically between horses to take the lead in early stretch. La Coronel just needed a moment to find her next gear, however, and once she did, she unleashed a devastating turn of foot to power past her compatriot in the final strides for the win. The winner was cross-entered in Saturday's GII American Turf S. against males. Her connections will be represented on Saturday's card when champion and morning-line favorite Classic Empire (Pioneerof the Nile) takes his place in the GI Kentucky Derby starting gate.

Graduating at third asking going a 1 1/16 miles over the Saratoga lawn Sept. 5 after two failed attempts sprinting on the dirt, La Coronel followed suit with a decisive victory in Keeneland's GIII Jessamine S. Oct. 12. Drawn in post 13 of 14 as the favorite in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita Nov. 4, the $375,000 OBSAPR buy made a wide, late rally to be sixth, after which she had double knee surgery. A neck second when making her 2017 debut in Tampa's GIII Florida Oaks Mar. 11, she returned to winning ways last time with an impressive success in Keeneland's GIII Appalachian S. Apr. 13.

Pedigree Notes:

The winner is out of 2006 GIII Whimsical S. winner Listen, whose most recent produce is a yearling colt by Gemologist. La Coronel hails from the family of MGISW turfer Listening (Night Shift); MGSW Listen Here (Gulch); and MGSW & GISP Beautiful Noise (Sunny's Halo), who is the dam of Grade II winner Linda (Scat Daddy).
