OBS August Starts Tuesday

The Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's August Yearling Sale begins Tuesday with a selected session starting at 11 a.m. The sale continues with open sessions Wednesday and Thursday, also beginning at 11 a.m. A total of 811 yearlings have been catalogued for the three-day sale, with 217 offered during Tuesday's select session.

During last year's select session of the auction, 170 yearlings grossed $7,830,700 for an average of $46,063 and a median of $35,000. George Bolton paid the sale's top price of $230,000 to acquire a colt by Big Drama. The colt's half-sister by First Dude sells Wednesday as hip 240. Also in the catalogue is hip 191, a half-sister by Broken Vow to Saturday's GII Del Mar H. winner Big John B (Hard Spun). The filly is also a full to graded stakes winner Circle Unbroken.

Francis and Barbara Vanlangendonck's Summerfield was the leading consignor at last year's select session, selling 23 head for $1,473,500.

First-crop stallions represented in the catalogue include: Aikenite, Astrology, Biondetti, Bodemeister, Caleb's Posse, Dialed In, Gemologist, Hansen, Jersey Town, Maclean's Music, Mission Impazible, Overdriven, Shackleford, Stay Thirsty, Tapizar, The Factor and Union Rags.

Recent graduates of the August sale include GIII Gotham S. winner El Kabeir (Scat Daddy), who brought $250,000 at the 2013 renewal and 'TDN Rising Star' and graded stakes winner Mr. Jordan (Kantharos), who sold for $63,000 in 2013 before re-selling for $155,000 at the OBS April sale the following spring. Ekati's Phaeton (Tale of Ekati), who sold for $50,000 at the 2013 August sale, won this year's GIII Old Hat S. and GII Davona Dale S. Magna Light (Magna Graduate), who brought $10,000 at last year's August sale before reselling for $110,000 at the OBS April sale, finished first in the GIII Sanford S. before being disqualified and placed third.
