New York-bred Wonderment handled two turns and open company for the first time with aplomb in front-running fashion here.
Winner of her first two starts as a juvenile in an 11-day span, including a runaway tally in Belmont's six-furlong Lynbrook S. July 19, she tired to finish third in her sophomore debut after pressing the pace in Aqueduct's Franklin Square S. Feb. 20.
Getting Lasix for the first time while making her initial start beyond six furlongs in this one, Wonderment seized the early advantage from her inside draw and coasted along through opening splits of :23.25 and :47.07. Bowling along on the lead beneath Cornelio Velasquez, she kicked clear as they kicked for home and drew off down the lane to win for fun.
“That last race she was really sharp, and her gallops have been getting stronger and stronger, and her breezes have been so sharp, we were confident that she would like the route of ground,” Ken McPeek assistant trainer Alan Shell said.
Velasquez added, “My filly was coming off a layoff in New York and she needed her race last time. She wanted to go to the lead and we had a lot of horse coming down the top of the stretch. She likes the distance and the synthetic track and she wanted to go easy on the lead.”
Wonderment's two-time winning dam A Wonder She Is also has a 2-year-old filly named Arabesque (Twirling Candy), a yearling colt by Discreetly Mine and was bred back to Itsmyluckyday.
