Nutan (Ire) (Duke Of Marmalade {Ire}) was one of the leading protagonists for a wide-open renewal of this prestigious contest at Hamburg and he justified market confidence by stamping his superiority on proceedings to provide trainer Peter Schiergen with a fifth edition. Having graduated by seven lengths in an 11-furlong conditions event at Cologne May 10, the bay had finished third to Shimrano (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) when making the early pace in the G2 Oppenheim-Union-Rennen over that same track and trip June 14 but enjoyed the run of the race this time from his inside draw. Second early on the rail granted cover and an ideal lead by Koffi Prince (Ger) (Lando {Ger}), he was always traveling with purpose in his perfect position with Andrasch Starke intent on sticking hard to the fence to save vital ground. When the seam opened turning for home as the long-time leader veered left as he tired, Nutan gradually stretched clear from the quarter pole and went to the line unchallenged with his rivals spread across the track and the favorite Shimrano ending up on the stand's rail after a horror trip.
